Lake Isabella was formerly a reservoir in New California that was drained prior to 2274 by the New California Republic, leaving only the muddy lakebed.

Background[]

Prior to the involvement of the New California Republic, Lake Isabella was a heavily irradiated water reservoir. Due to the high radiation levels, the only things living in the immediate area were mutants and feral tribals. This changed when the NCR's need for a source of purifiable water lead them to Lake Isabella. The NCR sending troopers to clear the area of its previous inhabitants and established a purification and drainage centre within the Isabella Dam's ruins.

Within months, all the lake's irradiated water was purified and drained by onsite NCR engineers and civilian apprentices from the town of Woffo, supplying purified water to the people of New California via water merchants. The draining of the lake had removed the primary radiation source in the area, having left a field of minorly irradiated mud and sediment on the lakebed, allowing the area to heal as well as supplying the region with large amounts of purified water.

However, once the lake was completely drained, it became apparent the NCR's thirst was not so easily quenched, the demand for clean water having increased due to territorial expansion. Ideas began to form of draining the Kern River as well; however, it would take an investment of over a million NCR Dollars to build another facility or divert the river to the Isabella Dam, which the taxpaying citizens would not have been fond of. These ideas were abandoned in 2274 when the NCR occupied Hoover Dam, a larger source of clean water and a source of energy. This led to an exodus of a majority of NCR personnel stationed at the Lake Isabella, including the troopers to be sent eastward to the Mojave, leaving a skeleton crew of engineers to maintain the Isabella Dam as the remaining water supply is transported out and members of the Woffo Militia doing runs in the area.
